Prof. Yang Jiemian Visits Vietnam

From April 21 to 25, 2024, at the invitation of Dr. Pham Lan Dung,President of Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of Academic Advisory Council of Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), visited Hanoi, Vietnam. In Vietnam, Prof. Yang Jiemian visited the Chinese Embassy in Vietnam, and attended the ASEAN Future Forum and China Talk seminar.

On April 22, Prof. Yang Jiemian visited the Chinese Embassy in Vietnam and exchanged views with Amb. Xiong Bo, the Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam, and Amb. Hou Yanqi, the Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN, on the promotion of China-ASEAN relations and the development of China-Vietnam relations.

On April 23, Prof. Yang Jiemian attended the ASEAN Future Forum, which organized by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam. As the only Chinese expert invited to the Forum, Prof. Yang Jiemian delivered a keynote speech on Plenary 2, “Ensuring Comprehensive Security for a People-Centered ASEAN Community”. This plenary was chaired by Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam. Other speakers included: H.E. Retno Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia; H.E. Kung Phoak, Secretary of State, Kingdom of Cambodia; H.E. George Yeo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Singapore; Mr. Kavi Chongkittavorn, Senior Fellow, Institute for Strategic and International Studies, Thailand; and Dr. Damian Hickey, Regional Director for Southeast Asia, Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. H.E. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, and H.E. Tony Blair, Former UK Prime Minister, sent video messages.

H.E. Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Vietnam; H.E. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR; H.E. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines; The Right Honourable Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia; H.E. Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand; H.E. Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste; H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN; and H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, attended the opening ceremony either online or offline. Amb. Hou Yanqi attended the forum and spoke at the luncheon. Nearly 500 delegates from the diplomatic missions, think tanks and businesses from ASEAN member states and dialogue partners attended the Forum.

On April 24, Prof. Yang Jiemian visited Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and exchanged views with Dr. Pham Lan Dung on international issues of common concern and think tank cooperation.

After the meeting, Prof. Yang Jiemian attended the 23rd China Talk. As the keynote speaker, Prof. Yang Jiemian delivered a speech on the theme of “The future of world order: a view from China”. The program was hosted by Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Office in Vietnam, and was moderated by Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Vice President of Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. Amb. Assoc. Prof. Dang Dinh Quy, former Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nation, and Amb. Dino Patti Djalal, former Deputy-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Indonesia, made comments and discussion. Nearly 10 former Vietnamese ambassadors, representatives from 15 embassies in Vietnam, including Amb. Sandeep Arya, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, as well as students and faculty from the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam attended the seminar and participated in the interaction.
